London, baby!

My friend Luiz and I have been planning to go to London for ages, but we never got around to actually doing it. London is not very far from here so we did not have an excuse to stay here. On the other hand, there was no specific reason to go any time soon so we just kept postponing it. Fortunately for us, that reason appeared in September in the form of an e-mail: my friend (and former WEHI colleague) Chaille was coming to Europe in October. Getting to see Australian friends is something that does not happen very often so you should grasp any chance you get. In other words: Lemmus and Luiz were finally going to London.

The preparation

Niederrhein airportGetting ready for a short trip is obviously not very hard. Just find a way to get there and a place to sleep. We wanted to fly from Flughafen Niederrhein (a small airport, former military base, just across the German border) because that was close to our homes.
You got to love the Internet: booking a trip is so easy now. Finding the cheapest airfare is not, at least, not on the Ryanair website. But I managed to get the lowest possible fare: just 2 cents and a load of taxes and fees. About forty Euros for a return flight, not bad at all. Finding a place to sleep was even easier. We would stay in a hostel room with ensuite and we only had to share with two other people.
The other part of travel plans is getting in the mood. That was not very hard at all: Luiz and I just yelled "London, baby" to each other every time we met. Just like in Friends, it became annoying after a while. But only when we actually arrived in London ;)
