Weblog of a Lemmus
The week is finally over work-wise. I'm seriously relieved about that because I feel like crap. I don't really know why, but somehow it has all been a bit much this week. I just want to relax a bit. Unfortunately, that is not usually the way I spend my weekends. Especially this one is going to be filled with all kinds of housework: cleaning, ironing, grocery shopping, and maybe getting a haircut. I'd also like some time to update my website and I probably need to get in a few hours of work. I think I'll need a stiff drink when I get home.
Our lab has an overly fanatic AC system. As a result of that, the temperature in summer remains below nineteen degrees, even on a hot day. Some people are bothered by that low temperature. I personally don't mind (I had worse temperatures at my desk at WEHI), but my office mates actually wore their coats inside. I also saw quite a number of people in sweaters. I guess my fur and that layer of <ahum /> insulation really do work. Or maybe it's because I eat the occasional piece of dead animal.
Anyway, even though the temperature is not a serous problem for me, it does bother me that the university wastes so much energy on unnescesary cooling. That's a shame for a university that tries to be green. By the way, the current solution to our temperature problem is turning on the heaters. Sigh.
Today is the first hot day in ages. That is, if you consider thirty degrees hot. The Netherlands are always ill-prepared for such weather. Air conditioning is still relatively uncommon here. Fortunately, the train does have a reasonable cooling system. However, the performance is limited on days like this one. All in all, it's hard to keep my head cool today.
I left my grandparents' early to avoid the worst of the heat. I hope to be at home at one in the afternoon. I still need to grab lunch but the regular supermarkets aren't open today. I could go to McDonald's, but I'm not sure whether I want to venture into town with all my luggage. I'm easily annoyed by people as it is and a warm day will only make matters worse. It was bad enough I had to share my train carriage with a bunch of noisy bastards. In the end I just decided to move. It's actually much better where I am sitting now.
You see, I just like some peace and quiet. If you give me that, I'm not that difficult to get along with. If you don't, I may easily reach boiling point.
